Joyce University Deploys Fifth Cohort of Nursing Students to Serve at Clinica Esperanza in Roatan, Honduras

Salt Lake City, UT – August 03, 2022 On their fifth international clinical trip, Joyce University of Nursing and Health Sciences nursing students and faculty traveled to Roatan, Honduras for a unique opportunity where students got the chance to complete clinical education hours while providing medical support to communities in need. Joyce University’s international clinical program has partnered with Clinica Esperanza since 2021. Students work with the organization to support their mission and programs. Clinica Esperanza, a 501(c)(3) organization, is committed to creating an environment where the best possible healthcare can be provided, with educational opportunities for both the people they serve and the local healthcare providers.

“We are grateful to Clinica Esperanza and the local community in Roatan for their continued partnership and embracing the involvement of our students and faculty,” said Daniel Wakamatsu, lead faculty of the international clinical programs at Joyce. “Our students collaborate with clinical staff, community members, and each other in various settings throughout their time in Roatan, allowing them to develop clinical and critical thinking skills that prepare them to care for underserved and diverse populations”

Over the course of two weeks, Joyce students worked with doctors and nurses to provide necessary primary care services for the island community. The program required students to participate in clinical and outreach activities while also maintaining their studies virtually.

Joyce University seeks out diverse opportunities for its students to participate in throughout the year. In addition to Clinica Esperanza, Joyce University students have served deployments with the non-profit I Am Hope Guatemala, based in Antigua, Guatemala.
